DeenCompanion is built privacy-first. We hold no account for you, and nothing you do in the app is sent to us. There are no analytics, no tracking or advertising SDKs, no crash-reporting SDK, and no ads. No sign-in is required. The app's Qur'an, hadith, duʿā and prayer content is bundled in the app and works fully offline; further translations, tafsirs and recitations can be downloaded from the Qur'an library if you choose.
What stays on your device (and never leaves it)
Everything you create or set is stored only on your phone, and is never transmitted:
Bookmarks, saved-verse collections, reading position, reading-face and display settings
Prayer and fasting logs, and khatmah (completion) progress
Zakāt figures you enter
Your location — its coordinates, and the city you set (saved so prayer times work offline)
Recitation-practice recordings and results
Permissions, and what each is used for
Location — used only to calculate prayer times and the Qibla direction. The calculation happens on your device, and the app never sends your coordinates to us or to anyone else. To show a city name, the app asks your phone's own system service — the one built into your phone, provided by Apple on iPhone and by Google on Android — under that provider's own privacy terms. If your phone has no such service, the app simply shows "Your location". You can deny location and set your city by hand; the app still works.
Microphone — used only for the optional Recitation Practice feature. Your recitation is transcribed entirely on your device; no audio is ever uploaded or stored off your phone.
Physical activity — used only for the optional Ṭawāf / Saʿī counter (step detection) during the Hajj/ʿUmrah companion. Processed on-device; never transmitted.
Notifications, exact alarms, run-at-startup, vibrate — used to deliver prayer-time and reminder notifications at the correct moment, and to restore them after a restart. These are local notifications scheduled on your device — there is no push server.
Internet — used only for the requests listed under What leaves your phone below.
What leaves your phone
None of these requests carries your name, an account, an advertising ID or any identifier of yours. Like every request on the internet, each one reaches its server from your connection's IP address; we keep none of them. All of them are encrypted (HTTPS).
Recitation and duʿā audio you choose to play or download — from public Qur'an and duʿā audio services: everyayah.com, audio.qurancdn.com, verses.quran.com, the Tarteel audio CDN, hisnmuslim.com and quranicaudio.com. Each request names only the recording you asked for. Audio you download is then played from your phone with no further requests.
Editions you download from the Qur'an library — translations, tafsirs and recitation timings, which come from Quran Foundation. These requests pass through a small relay we run, which holds Quran Foundation's access key so that your phone never needs one. The relay forwards only the content you asked for, adds nothing about you, and is not set up to record anything; Quran Foundation sees the relay, not you.
A city name you type, to look it up — when you set your location by searching for a city, the name you typed is looked up: by your phone's own system service on iPhone, and on Android by Open-Meteo's geocoding service (open-meteo.com). Only the text you typed is sent — never where you are.
Data we collect or share
We collect nothing. DeenCompanion sends us no personal or sensitive data, and we keep none. Nothing is shared with anyone for advertising, analytics or any other purpose. The only things that leave your phone are the requests listed above, and none of them identifies you.
Feedback
If you send feedback from the app, it opens your own email app or share sheet, addressed to us; you choose whether to send it, and it is then an ordinary email between you and us. The app sends nothing itself.
Children
DeenCompanion contains no objectionable content and collects no personal information. It is suitable for all ages.
